Information technology and mobile communication is changing at an unprecedented rate. Traditional mobile communication in terms of telephony is developing into devices of far-reaching capabilities. This development creates the foundation for many hitherto unexplored mobile applications, at the same time as it significantly improves the quality of existing applications and services. The development also poses urgent and interesting technical challenges. Research efforts will focus on mobile communication and software intensive systems, in particular the synergy between the two areas. Mobile devices are becoming more than just communication devices. They are increasingly providing more decision support for users and serving as powerful interfaces to complex distributed systems with autonomous character. Concrete examples of such distributed systems, some of which interact with mobile devices are e-health management systems, smart buildings and next-generation cars with collision avoidance systems. Also, traditional problems in the process industry such as quality monitoring and fault detection are becoming dependent on technologies associated with distributed decision-making and require interfaces to distributed information systems. It is urgent to approach these challenges in a broader context where traditional tools for software development, electronics, embedded systems and communication engineering are complemented with methods in vision, visualization, automatic control, sensor fusion, artificial intelligence, and new software paradigms. eLLIIT is a large coalition, pooling complementing competences at the universities of Link¨oping and Lund, and two selected research groups at Halmstad and Blekinge. It is designed to approach the future problems in IT and mobile communication in a cohesive and broad manner. IT and mobile communication is a highly prioritized area at LiU1 and LU.
