Matstat Website Inventory
(using the Matstat style sheet as default)
...if you have style sheets enabled, that is.[12/10-05] I am taking an inventory of the existing Mathematical statistics (Matstat) website. Things will be added here on an irregular basis, together with ideas of what needs to be done to sort out the mess, suggestions for improvements, things we lack but would want, and things we have but don't want. Send your further suggestions to me. / Anna

[11/11-05] Seminar handout added.
General problems
The whole site has grown organically and is now a tangled mess with a lot of dead ends and a general lack of cross-referencing. There are a large number of pages that have not been updated in a very long time, probably because no one remembers that they exist.
We should have a common style on all pages, including a common navigation bar. This page is equiped with several slightly different styles that could be used. If you are viewing this page in Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox (but not Netscape 4.x), Konqueror, or Opera you can see their effects by choosing View, Use Style (or variants thereof). This can not be done in Internet Explorer or Epiphany. It may or may not be possible in other browsers. For the benefit for people using browser that lack this feature, I will rotate between the different stylesheet.
[27/10-05] Printer style sheet version that skips the left and top navigations? See the Printer friendly stylesheet example.
What should go on the Matstat front page, appart from the links? Upcoming seminars? News, e.g. new employees, visitors, and conferences? Both seminars and news should be in databases so that obsolete information can be automatically removed from the page. Short description of what Matstat is?
Which links should be on all pages? Obviously compulsory are Lund University (with logo), Centre for Mathematical Sciences, and Mathematical statistics. Natural additional candidates are Education, Research, Publications, and People but what about the others, e.g. Consulting? The other departments, the library, or the faculties (Science and Engineering)?
Site map colour coding
- Yellow boxes are pages that are shared with the entire Centre for Mathematical Sciences (MC).
- Green boxes are pages outside MC.
- Gray boxes are pages at the other departments of MC.
- Thick blue arrows are reciprocal links between pages.
- Thin black arrows are one-way links or non-obvious reciprocal links.
- Links to the MC or Matstat homepages are almost always present and are thus not shown.
- Other colours indicate links under a common heading.
Education
- There are separate entries for undergraduate and postgraduate education from the MC page but the graduate link only gives the list of courses. Everything else about graduate education is on the undergraduate pwhiteage. This needs to be adjusted somehow.
- What kind of information, appart from links, should be on the Matstat education front page? General description of our education? A list of courses given "now"? Something else?
- Information should not be separated between faculties. Almost all courses are given at both faculties anyway.
- Use the course database to generate the courselist; see Matte-NF where this is done.
- Standardized course homepages. Matte-NF does this using the course database and dynamically generated pages; follow any course link from Matte-NF to see what this can look like.
- The current course information is buried too deep in the structure: MC -> Matstat -> Education -> Courses -> Homepage -> Aktuell information. This path needs to be shortened.
- We need a list of all upcoming exams.
- A lot of general information is outdated and/or very sparse and needs to be updated and augmented.
- We need a page containing information for our teachers, e.g. Kursutvärderingsblankett and Timrapportering.
- [1/11-05] The course file directories should be separated from the course home pages in the same way that personal directories are separated from personal home pages.
- [7/11-05] The International education pages are sparcely updated and not reached from the Matstat pages, only from the MC-page. They also have two additional lists of courses making six(!) separate course lists that all have to be updated every year. Solution: cut down on the number of lists and use the course database.

Research
- [27/10-05] There is no description of what Matstat is and what areas we do research in and what research groups we have. For example, there are no links to the home pages of those groups that have them, e.g. Bioinformatics.
- [27/10-05] The data materials seem out of place in a research contect.

Publications
- [27/10-05] This is confusing. For now, it would seem to be easier to have a page with five links, one to the database and one for each of the four departments. Anticipating a workable LIBRIS-use.
- [27/10-05] The page
linked to from the MC-page
is not the index-page. The
index-page has a working link to the publication database
and lacks the "LTH" = Matte-LTH link.
[2/11-05] This has been fixed now. - [27/10-05] It is not obvious where publications from the two Mathematics departments (NF and LTH) are listed.

Consulting
- [1/11-05] This page actually tells a little bit about who and what we are! Too bad it hasn't been updated since 2000.

Location
- [7/11-05] The problem here, apart from the dead link, is that every conference makes its own copy of this page, with additional information. E.g., IASE-2004, which contains, among other things, a map showing how to walk to MC from various places in town and a list of suitable accomodation in the vicinity.

People
- Put the list of faculty and staff, alphabetically ordered, on the Staff front page instead of on a separate page. Provide the option to resort people into categories. Provide all contact information, including room number, here. This requires a database but that is no problem.
- [13/10-05] There is no joint MC staff list. This could (and should?) be done using a common database.
- [13/10-05] There should be pictures of everyone, definitely on the personal homepages but probably also in a collection somewhere on the staff page.
- [1/11-05] Just to show what the layout can do for the overall impression, here is the most basic of personal homepages in its current layout to be compared with a possible new style.

Links
- [7/11-05] This page is overrun with dead links and should be put out of its misery.
- [7/11-05] It includes links to the obsolete pages for the Matstat library.
- [7/11-05] What it does not have is links to the other Matstat departments in Sweden.

Local
- [7/11-05] This could qualify for preservation as a historical site! It needs to be cleaned up and integrated with the Local Help Pages.
