Ilze Ziedins The University of Auckland When networks go bad.... Does adding extra capacity to networks reduce congestion? Not always. Sometimes adding extra capacity at nodes or on links, or even adding extra routes or links, can lead to greater delays and worse performance. This has implications for both transportation networks and computer networks. This talk will give examples of such paradoxical behaviour, and discuss why it happens. The discussion will be in the context of queueing networks, with some reference to game theoretic ideas.
