Sofia Åberg Palm distributions of wave characteristics in encountering seas Abstract: Distributions of wave characteristics of ocean waves, such as slope, amplitude or wavelength, are an important tool in the study of ship stability. For example are capsize events highly related to the properties of the individual waves. In this talk a short introduction is given to how to define and compute distributions of wave characteristics for Gaussian seas. This includes Palm distributions, level crossings of Gaussian processes and Rice's formula. Moreover, distributions of several wave characteristics are presented for two different cases, namely for waves observed along a line at a fixed time point and for waves encountering a ship sailing on the ocean. The relation between the distributions obtained in the two cases are also given physical interpretation in terms of velocities of the individual waves.
