D.E. Ford College of Forest Resources University of Washington What is needed for statistical analysis of spatial processes in ecology? Abstract: Ecological sciences have important questions about spatial relationships and interactions that are central for the development of the subject. However, the use of spatial statistical methods is not well developed and frequently uses naive null hypotheses. I will discuss reasons why this might be so with illustrations from different data types, particularly point processes and quadrat analysis. Some approaches in the development of quantitative methods will be discussed along with contributions that could be made to ecological theory. Of particular importance is the need establish approaches to the experimental manipulation of spatial processes.
