Lars Barring Dept of Physical Geography & Ecosystems Analysis Lund University Changing climate? The future of historical weather data The globe has become about 0.6 C warmer during the last century, and climate models suggest a further increase in the range of 1-3.5 C. This is unprecedented in relation to millenium-scale climate reconstructions but a hardly noticeable change on a geological time- scale. The major impact on human activities and the environment of this increase will probably come from extreme climate events. The question is thus what do we know about climate extremes, their natural variability, and how well do the climate models reproduce them. And what can we do to improve our knowledge? I will discuss these questions and present some work we are doing here in Lund.
