Project ideas from industry

The projects ideas below are provided by Telia Research and may be used for PhD thesis work, masters' theses etc.

(i) Five projects, Analyzing and presenting IPPM metrics, Testing conformance to congestion control and avoidance rules, Interpretation of congestion signals, Effects from sampling on measurement accuracy, and Measuring loss using time thresholds are provided by Ulf Bodin. More information is available here.

(ii) The following project, Router performance model, is provided by Istvan Cselenyi.

There is only one CPU for processing signaling messages (on control plane) and forwarding data packets (on data plane) in simple IP routers. Therefore the load on the control plane has an impact on the data plane performance of the router. In order words, the latency and loss of packet forwarding is increasing in case of (1) more intensive signaling (i.e. more frequent message arriving) and (2) more concurrent reservation sessions in the router.

We established a simple heuristical model for capturing these relations. Moreover, we made several measurements for quantifying the dependence between control plane load and data plane performance.

A possible task is to enhance our simple model by describing the work of the router's CPU with a stochastic model based on statistics gained from the measurement results.

Four slides which explain the model and give some measurement results are available here.
