About the former Department of Mathematical Statistics
Department of Mathematical Statistics |
Teaching and research in mathematical statistics began in Lund around 1910 as part of the curriculum in astronomy under the influence of professor Carl Wilhelm Charlier and his student Sven Wicksell. When Lund Institute of Technology was created in 1962, Gunnar Blom became Lund's first professor of mathematical statistics and started a graduate program both at the Institute of Technology and at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. A second chair was created in 1988, at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, and as of 1997 two of the lecturers have been promoted to professors. From 1989, the department shares the responsibility for a biostatistics program with the Faculties of Social Sciences and Medicine, and a formal PhD program in biostatistics was started in 1996.
The department has a comprehensive teaching and research program in statistics and probability with approximately 3000 hours of teaching per year for all students at the Institute of Technology and for science students and with a graduate program in probability and statistics. Since 1970, the department has awarded 30 doctors degrees: Twelve men and one woman have received the degree of Doctor of Technology, and fifteen men and two women the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Nine of these have become professors at Swedish and Scandinavian universities.
The research deals with probability and statistics, basic research in mathematical statistics theory as well as applied research, often carried out in close collaboration with researchers in other fields.

The department has 18 teachers with doctors degrees, 24 graduate students and three technical staff. Of the university budget of approximately 12.4 MSEK for 1997, the School of Technology covers about 54 %, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences 46 %. External research support was apprximately 8.3 MSEK for the year 1997.
