ECMI at Lund

The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) is a collection of European mathematical institutes with the intention of stimulating the use of mathematical sciences in industry. It promotes the exchange of students between the institutes and the Centre for Mathematical Sciences at Lund University is one of these.

ECMI Master in Industrial Mathematics

The Consortium can issue a certificate of an ECMI Master in Industrial Mathematics (120 ECTS) after an assessment by the ECMI Educational Committee. The two-year master programme has two different branches:

  • Techno-mathematics relates to the modelling of technological subjects as encountered in computer vision, mechanics, electronics, chemistry, physics, bioengineering, pharmacy, civil engineering, etc.
  • Econo-mathematics deals with problems like financial decision processes, statistics, planning and scheduling, operation analysis, quality control, distribution management and data communication.

Note that this programme is neither an international master programme with certificate from Lund University (LU), nor does it lead to a Master of Science in Engineering (Swedish "civilingenjör") at Lund Institute of Technology (LTH). The courses offered within the ECMI Master programme at LU can be found in the Engineering Mathematics programme (300 ECTS). However, there are more requirements for obtaining an MSc degree in engineering at LTH than for obtaining an ECMI Master certificate. On the other hand, obtaining an MSc degree is not sufficient to get an ECMI Master certificate.

A new curriculum for an ECMI Master in Industrial Mathematics is presently under development. Here is a draft of how such a programme could be implemented at Lund University.
