Official Course Description
Ordinary differential equations are one of the most important mathematical tools within the natural sciences. They can be used to describe anything from population dynamics to quantum mechanics. In this course some classical solution methods for first order equations will first be discussed. After this, linear equations of higher order with constant coefficients and first order systems will be studied. Power series solutions will be introduced for linear equations with variable coefficients. The last part of the course will focus on general theorems about existence and uniqueness. These theorems are important since most differential equations lack explicit solutions.
